Medieval manuscripts are filled with animals, rabbits in particular doing all manner of tasks. A common task is violence. They are often depicted wielding medieval weapons bludgeoning, shooting, and flaying humans. The true meaning or original humor of these images hasn't survived over the centuries, but there is speculation that medieval people took delight in the reversal of expectations: rabbits getting their revenge, since they are generally regarded as passive and non-violent animals. This scene features a dog riding atop and annoyed rabbit prepared to joust with a a panicked bunny atop a man-headed snail! I think the latter has the worse mount!
